Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems have been reprogrammed to bring in as much outdoor air possible within the limits of the system. The University is adhering to ASHRAE (American Society of Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations regarding operation of HVAC equipment and systems. The work in facilities where faculty, staff or students have returned to campus is complete.

By the time students arrive, the building systems and commissioning team will have invested over 5,000 hours into HVAC assessments and improvements alone. Read more in Pittwire.

Keep It Clean

One of the best ways to support a safe and healthy campus is frequent cleaning and disinfection. In addition to the work done by University staff members, each University member who is on campus has a key role to play.

University custodians and housekeepers will clean and sanitize building areas, including residence halls, daily where authorized onsite University members are located. Frequently touched surfaces will be cleaned multiple times per day in all common spaces by University custodians and housekeepers.

University members should clean frequently touched surfaces and objects within their work, living and study spaces using an EPA-approved disinfectant for the virus that causes COVID-19 to further reduce the risk of COVID-19 in their work area. You will need to clean personal desks, telephones, computers and office chairs. Wipe dispensers containing the appropriate disinfectants will be located in all educational and learning spaces, including classrooms, computer labs and other areas.

Residence Halls and University Housing

Auxiliary Services personnel will clean on-campus housing common areas daily and communal restrooms twice daily. For students residing in suite- and apartment-style housing or hotel rooms, Auxiliary Services will provide disposable gloves, household cleaners, disinfectants and cleaning instructions to students in hotel rooms and suite/apartment-style rooms.

Building Access Management and Status Updates

Facilities Management maintains an updated list of the readiness status of all buildings on the Pittsburgh campus, as well as steps to request access to a building. Learn more on Facilities Management's website.

Signage

Please only use signage produced by Facilities Management or the Office of University Communications and Marketing, which has been approved by Pitt's Healthcare Advisory Group.

Cleaning After a COVID-19 Case on Campus

Whenever a person who has tested positive for COVID-19 is reported to have been in a campus building during the time they may have been infectious, EH&S will instruct the designated cleaning crew in Facilities Management or Auxiliary Services to close those rooms for a 24-hour period, if possible, and cleaned. EH&S will notify occupants when the area is cleared to be reopened.

See the Cleaning, Disinfection and Hygiene Standards and Guidelines for additional details.

Share the Power of Pitt

The Power of Pitt is a promise to our community. Every member is committing to adopt healthy practices, including wearing a face covering and practicing physical distancing and handwashing. The posters, graphics and other communications tools on the Share the Power of Pitt page are available for download, sharing and use by all members of our community.  They remind us of our promise and the behaviors we must demonstrate to keep our campuses safe and healthy.

If you don’t see what you need to help reinforce the Power of Pitt, please fill out a marketing project request.
